Actions

The US-Japan NoWar Network engages in various activities in solidarity with colleagues and third parties to participate in the larger civil movement for peace at this time. We define Actions as a collective public act that is intended to capture the public’s attention and most importantly that of the target decision-maker in order to inject our demands for peace and have them reflected in the ultimate decisions made on behalf of its constituencies. A public element is a means to raise public awareness of dissent and also of groups active in dissent, so that other concerned citizens are exposed to existing groups that they may turn to. The most significant impact of the public element, however is that it offers a chance to effect public opinion, or at least stimulate discussion around it.

What we’ve done

Sep. 29, 2001 Rally

So far, the Network has participated in the Mass Anti-War Rally and Demonstrations held at Dolores Park of San Francisco on Sep. 29, 2001. More than 300,000 protesters are said to have turned up. It was organized and called by International Action Center and the international Coalition ANSWER of which it is member. Members and volunteers quickly scrambled together posterboards and markers the night before the Rally and came up with apprx. 40 bilingual posters. The next day, more than 40 Network members and supporters were present at the Rally raising the Japanese voices for Peace, for Justice and against the current US-Japan alliance based on perhaps political considerations but certainly not on peace.

The local press as well as Japanese media acknowledged that there was presence of a voice for peace by Japanese at this rally. We have also raised our presence to fellow peace protesters and the Bay Area at large, and it is important to do so provided that Japan is one of most dedicated supporters of the US war-hungry agenda that increasingly threatens every one’s security and safety at home today. Japan certainly needs to recognize that is own people do not support its current position, but it would also help the international alliances to know this to make an effective case for the “WAR”’s illegitimacy in the US and beyond.
